Department of Mathematics

Mathematics helps you to develop critical skills like decision-making, mental agility, problem-solving, and logical thinking. People face problems in their professional as well as personal lives. In such situations, their ability to make rational and informed decisions comes from how educated and self-aware they are.Carl Friedrich Gauss referred to Mathematics as the Queen of the Sciences. Pure Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields including Natural Science, Engineering, Medicine, Finance and the Social sciences and Applied Mathematics.

Narajole Raj College, one of the oldest colleges in old Medinipur district, established in September, 1966, is a wonderful phenomenon in the educational scenario of Midnapore district. At a time when the darkness was prevailing all around and ignorance was rampant in the region, the Narajole Raj College appeared with a bacom of learning in the society. It ushered a new path of higher education.  It fulfilled the long cherished dreams and necessities of the young generation.

The higher secondary course in science with subjects’ combination of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics    was first introduced in 1979. After that, the undergraduate pass course level in pure science with subject combination Physics, chemistry and mathematics was introduced in 1983. The Mathematics (Honours) course was first introduced in 1995. At first, the course was taught at old building i.e., “RAJ BHAWAN” and now at new building from December 2012, onwards.

Presently, the faculty of the department consist of one associate professor, two assistant professors and one sact.

Education has always been celebrated for its inherent power to change the world. But, of course it needs to be the right type of education. Is it sufficient if one procures a degree - to be called an educated person?  The answer is absolutely no. As Vivekananda put it, education is that by which character is formed, strength of mind is enhanced, the heart is expanded and by which one learns to stand on one’s own feet.

The vision for education in the field of Mathematics must recognise that the strength of an organisation depends on how much of selfless service it can offer to the society for its genuine need, as against the service by which the organisation makes easy money and satiates its greed. There is a need for constant research, up gradation and increasing excellence in terms of course curriculum, teaching methodology, and constant modernisation. Excellence is boundless and endless. Education has to change young people both internally in values, habit, and morals as well as externally in attitude, behaviour and understanding. The vision for the future would imply that the teacher and the student would be both teaching as they learn and learn as they teach.

The embedded vision of the department of Mathematics is to nurture the students into perfectly skilled entrepreneurs through innovative, experiential pedagogy by the facilitators. The teaching learning process would thereby aim to be student-centric to ensure the inculcation in them of confidence and improvisation abilities.
