Department of Sanskrit

The history of a nation is the history of its social traditions, the history of its culture; especially so for Bharatbarsh , which unlike modern geo- political nations, was and is a geo – cultural nation. The bond of each cultural bead has from time immemorial been threaded with Sanskrit language. Sanskrit language and literature, the bhasa of the Devas, not merely metaphorically, but practically is also the intellectual treasure house of generations –--- generations of scientific research, generations of gyan, generations of socio-political, even economics nitty-gritty’s. No learning can be complete without the knowledge of Sanskrit language. This is the language that leads to eternal bliss. Narajole Raj College may be relatively a young institute; but the deep thoughts that inspired the birth of this institute for higher education, were those of wise souls. They visualized the gateway to opportunity through the perusal of higher education, a magic door that would open out to the larger world. Many were the natural barriers that were enough to discourage youngsters of the surrounding locality to move out for higher education. Primarily poverty; the inability to invest for pursuing higher education –travelling to Calcutta University was a distant dream for many promising young men. Girls were forbidden even to dream. Thus inspired was born Narajole Raj College. Wisdom guided the godfathers of the college to choose Sanskrit as one of the courses to begin with, in keeping with the rich tradition of India. Thus began the long journey of the department, a journey far from over. In 1966 only general (elective) course in Sanskrit was offered. Then in 2005 the Honours course was introduced. In 2017, the department crossed another milestone --- introduction of Post Graduate course in Sanskrit. At the beginning there were only 30 students. But now there are 140 students in honours and 1000 students in general course. Departmental magazine ‘Prachyabani’ is published in every year. It has gained ISSN mark from 2014 and the students on this own initiative bring out wonderful wall magazine. Recently the departmental library is set up for the student .The no. of books kept in it is 200 or more. Moreover, the central college Library is enriched with almost 2000 and above books on Sanskrit language and literature. The Dept. hosted a National Seminar on The Vedas: Problem of the Environment today and possible Solution, in December 2011.
